Considering they each have a beer in front of them, no one in the picture looks happy - I get the impression they *really* didn’t want their picture taken.

2 year olds playing soccer (aka just running around like crazy) tomorrow morning, then cooking a turkey for dinner, and the Chicago Auto Show on Sunday - whoo hoo!

Tighten front wheel bearings, possibly do a battery replacement on another car...

I may make a bodywork tool I’ve been planning to do, or do some wiring in the shop for the lathe and mill.

Is this trend of symphonies playing live scores with movies new? I hadn’t heard of it until recently , but now I’ve seen The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars: A New Hope that way. Regardless of when the trend started, it’s absolutely brilliant!

I’ve got some friends coming over for some good old Halo LAN tonight , and then seeing the musical South Pacific at the symphony on Saturday.

Leaving a half hour to head over to the SMU natatorium. Daughter’s swim team is doing a trip to the SMU/Tulane meet. She and I have already been on deck in the new building, since we were timers at the conference championships last Spring.

Also, as I was typing this, Kia called and said Genie is ready to go. So, after I sleep in tomorrow morning, I’ll head over there and get my car back.

It’s been gaining steam for the last two years or so. Orchestras and venues have discovered that, with relatively little cost to themselves, they can practically pack the hall. We’ve done New Hope, La La Land, three of the Harry Potters, Wizard of Oz. Next year we’re doing Raiders of the Lost Ark and Close Encounters. We’ve also done the music of Zelda a couple of times, and a Pokemon show back when Pokemon Go was such a hit. I enjoy it, though the string players often bitch about it. They get a major workout, particularly with Williams.

Not too much sleeping in for me this weekend. Got too much to do. As I get older, though, I can’t sleep as late as I used to, and I tend to lament the lost time, even it is spent lazing on the sofa.

I’ve got two six packs of beer, supplies to make sticky rice dumplings and four loaves of bread (assuming power doesn’t go out), and boil-to-eat meals as backup, so I’m ready for the impending snowstorm. Gonna be cooking, baking, and  eating through the weekend, with a break or two to go do some donuts in the snow.

I was pretty amused by how ridiculous some of the violin parts seemed for Star Wars.  They’re so much quieter that I hadn’t noticed their very high pitch tremolo in recordings.  And they definitely seemed to spend a lot of time high up on the fingerboard. (I casually play violin, and like to sit front row by them so I can watch more closely).

Listen to the violins at the beginning of Harry Potter. It’s insane.

I went to a show featuring the Looney Toons with live symphony orchestra. It was a lot of fancy and childish fun. The John Williams show was quite good too.

Looney Tunes sounds like fun. There is actually a lot of legit classical music in those cartoons. And lots of it is heavily inspired by opera, Richard Strauss, etc. And of course, Wagner.

I’m not a violinist (thank god), but I can say that the really good composers, Williams of course among them, can write extraordinarily complex music for a given instrument, but they know so well how to write for the instruments that it’s playable. With a lot of work, mind you. Some composers just write hard music that his hard. The great ones write hard music that is playable.

It’s pretty great that WB had a full orchestra on staff for years. When the musicians weren’t busy with other higher profile projects, the cartoon unit comandeered them to score animated films. A lot of classical works were already familiar to the orchestra and copyright free, so the got used a lot.

Today is my son’s 12th birthday. We went the dinner and the Dud e Bros are here for a sleep over. He wanted monkey bread instead of cake so we did that. Tomorrow for the party we are having an arcade championship. A mix of old and new games and a full on bracket system. There were be tears of joy and of loss.

I also just heard something glass break down stairs and I am ignoring it. Wife has it under control.

post-weekend update:

All in all not to bad of a weekend. Accommodations were adequate , kids were well behaved, adults rolled with the punches and on the last run of the day my kid broke his arm. After that, 4 hr. drive through a snow storm to dump gear, pick up mom and spend the next 6 hrs. at the ER only to get home at 2AM. Thankfully we had call ahead priority at the ER due to Hemophillia so we weren’t sitting in the waiting room for long.
